Food & Acne - December 29th, 2009

We think about eating habits, and we think about acne.  Some of us would like to think it has nothing to do with it.  After all, it’s like obesity. You see that person eating nothing but junk food, and yet they’re as thin as a twig!  The thing is that realistically, they are an anomaly just as the person who eats junk food and nothing but and yet has clear skin is an anomaly.  You will very rarely if ever see an obese person who truly only eats vegetables and exercises constantly, and you will rarely if ever see a person who eats nothing but good foods, washes their face, etc, and yet has a face full of acne.  Genetics and disease can only account for so many anomalies.  Ultimately, not everyone is as honest as we think.

However, this being said, there is actually a scientific link that has been established between diet and acne.  On the good side of things, they have discovered that foods rich in essential vitamins and minerals, especially A, C, & E are good for the skin.  They have discovered that foods high in antioxidants kill off free radicals and are good for the skin.  They have discovered that more water is good for the skin.  So these are all things to consider.

But they have also discovered that an unhealthy diet can multiply acne problems.  Yes, you can take medicines.  But part of the treatment program for anything like this is to be proactive.  They found that those who changed their diet to a healthy diet plan cutting out a portion of their fats, sugars, and milk products were able to see significantly greater results with the same exact acne treatment.

Yes, we like to think it’s the doctor’s responsibility, the treatment’s responsibility, and we look for some imaginary miracle cure to just about everything.  But at some point, it comes time to take responsibility and realize that some things just won’t work out unless we take the steps necessary to help ourselves.
